Brno Dances the World

The 2025 World DanceSport Championships Delivered Top Performances and Emotions

The Vodova Sports Hall in Brno transformed into a stage of world dance excellence on Saturday, October 18. The Czech Republic hosted for the first time in history two World Championships in DanceSport – the WDSF World Championship in Latin American Dances and the WDSF World Championship in Showdance Standard Dances. The event took place as part of the prestigious Brno Open 2025 festival, under the auspices of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) and the Czech DanceSport Federation (ČSTS).

Brno as the Capital of World Dance

More than 250 top dancers from 42 countries gathered in the South Moravian metropolis. The entire evening was attended by over 3,500 spectators in the hall and thousands more watching live on Czech Television’s ČT Sport channel. The event was hosted by Jan Onder and Kamila Tománková, who created an atmosphere comparable to the world’s largest dance shows.

“For Brno, this is a tremendous honor. For the first time in history, we are hosting two World Championships and at the same time presenting the city as a cultural and sports center of Europe,” said Martin Odstrčil, main organizer of the event and founder of the Brno Open project.

Czech Dancers Among the World’s Elite

  • In the Latin American category, the pair Jakub Lipowski – Tereza Kučerová reached the Finals, confirming their position among the world’s best couples.
  • In the Showdance Standard category, Jan Metlický – Ela Odstrčilová dazzled with their choreography Eternal Light, winning 2nd place and a standing ovation from the audience.

“Dancing in front of a home audience is something indescribable. The energy from the crowd literally carried us,” said Ela Odstrčilová after the performance.

International Winners and Outstanding Performances

In the WDSF World Championship in Latin American Dances, the title went to Charles-Guillaume Schmitt – Elena Salikhova (FRA), who impressed the judges with their technique and expressiveness.

In Showdance Standard, Denmark’s Dmitri Kolobov – Signe Busk (DEN) dominated with an emotional choreography that received top marks from all members of the international jury.

Gala Evening Full of Emotion and Elegance

The final evening offered not only competitions but also a special samba–drumming show by Veronika Lálová, winner of the TV show Stardance, together with Ritmo Factory, and a ceremonial award ceremony attended by representatives of the City of Brno, the South Moravian Region, the National Sports Agency, and the Czech Olympic Committee.

The Mayor of Brno, Markéta Vaňková, emphasized in her speech: “DanceSport has a strong tradition in Brno. I am proud that our city has become the host of such an exceptional event that combines aesthetics, athletic performance, and international cooperation.”

Economic and Cultural Impact

According to preliminary estimates, the championship brought the City of Brno more than 25 million CZK in direct and indirect benefits, mainly from accommodation, transport, gastronomy, and tourism. The event also significantly promoted Czech DanceSport internationally and paved the way for future world-class competitions.

About the Brno Open Festival

The Brno Open Festival is the largest dance event in Central Europe, traditionally bringing elite dance couples from around the world to Brno. The 2025 edition combined the World Championship with open categories for amateurs, juniors, and seniors, offering a rich accompanying program for the public.

Brno Will Make the World Dance: The World DanceSport Championship Welcomes the Best Dancers from Around the Globe

A unique sporting and social event offering top performances, star personalities, and a festive gala evening

Brno – This weekend, Brno will turn into the center of world dance sport. Dozens of top dance couples from all over the world will arrive in the Moravian metropolis to compete for the title of World Champions as part of the prestigious Brno Open tournament – the largest and most significant dance competition held in the Czech Republic and across Europe.

Spectators can look forward not only to top-level sports performances but also to strong emotions, breathtaking choreography, and the festive atmosphere of a world-class event. Moreover, the Czech Republic will be strongly represented in the competitions, with a real chance of winning valuable medals.

The entire event is almost sold out, with only the last few tickets remaining for those who don’t want to miss this spectacular dance show in person. The whole evening will also be broadcast live on ČT Sport.

As part of Brno Open, two major events will take place under the patronage of the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF):

  • WDSF World Championship Latin
    • Approximately 90 couples from 40 countries around the world
    • One of the most audience-attractive categories
    • The Czech national team has high ambitions and is among the medal contenders
  • WDSF World Championship Showdance
    • 15 couples from 10 countries
    • Unique dance stories with a focus on artistic impression
    • Strong participation of Czech couples aiming for podium finishes

The World Championship in Brno will be open to the public, partners, and media. Visitors can look forward to top-level dance performances, a festive atmosphere, and the opportunity to experience the global dance scene in person.
